The Woman King (2022) is a historical action-drama inspired by real events, centering on the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit that protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. Led by the fierce and determined General Nanisca (Viola Davis), the Agojie warriors train the next generation to defend their land against foreign invaders and internal conflicts, particularly the growing threat of European and rival African slave traders.
The story follows Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a young, rebellious girl who refuses an arranged marriage and is offered to the Agojie. 
Under the guidance of seasoned warriors like Izogie (Lashana Lynch) and Amenza (Sheila Atim), Nawi learns discipline, resilience, and the meaning of true strength. Meanwhile, Nanisca struggles with personal demons as she prepares her warriors for an inevitable confrontation against their enemies, including the powerful Oyo Empire and European forces led by ruthless traders.
